Avaali’s M2M solution for Set-top box viewer data insight

Consumer behaviour for digital TV content adoption is undergoing a major transformation with advancement in technologies, leading towards a two way interaction and engagement model that is more intuitive in nature.

Avaali’s Viewer Management solution enables service providers to collects micro level user data from set-top-box (STB) and internet enabled hand held devices like tablets and smartphones. This solution provides real time visibility of audience count across content and services. However real-time visibility depends upon how the data is collected which in turn depends on the technology and infrastructure. Following are the typical ways to collect data:

  • Polling: As per the business requirement, the head end server is programed to poll the individual STB at a pre-defined frequency.
  • Transmission from STB: Data is locally stored and transmitted back to head-end depending upon either as an when the local memory is full or on daily basis on an allocated upstream
  • Transmission on broadband channel – This is near real-time delivery of STB data. Here STB should have broadband capabilities.

Generating customer level insights and monetizing such insights for greater returns on advertisement spend is not just the need of hour to attract new customer but also to retain base.
